PREVENTING INFORMATION FATIGUE
Enmeshed in this information age, we are bombarded with more information in a day than our ancestors received in years. Indeed, it is said that an average Sunday edition of the New York Times contains more information than the average person at the beginning of the twentieth century encountered in their whole lifetime! In our craving for knowledge and intellectual stimulation, it is common to devour vast helpings of sumptuous written and electronic material—only to wind up with a bad case of mental indigestion. When we take in more than we can absorb and integrate, the information drips off our minds like water off a duck. Few of us stop to soak on the ideas and implications of what we experience and get really “wet.” Distracted and mentally moving fast, we don’t have or make the time to be fully present, to ponder things deeply, or take our studies to heart.
“In a knowledge economy, digital information can flow fast and free. When everyone has the same digital information, value is created not necessarily by knowledge but through insights about that knowledge. In this new economy, human connections, and the conversation especially, is becoming a lost art that is ripe for a rebirth.”
—David Rock
In a report entitled “Dying for Information,” 50 percent of managers surveyed reported feeling overloaded by information and worried about the stress-related problems associated with information overload. Respondents cited three factors in this overload: 1) They don’t understand all the information they receive and don’t have the time to figure it all out; 2) They worry about how to manage the sheer volume of information; and 3) They worry that they might put themselves at a disadvantage because they might miss important information.
For people working under these pressures day in and day out, it is common to experience a constellation of symptoms that has come to be called information fatigue syndrome. Symptoms include:
•increased sense of frustration
•increased irritability that acts like a corrosive acid eroding the quality of working relationships
•inability to solve problems or make decisions
•tendency to panic, resulting in poor judgment, foolish decisions, and problematic consequences
Do these symptoms sound familiar to you? Take heart. If these factors are plaguing you, you can find greater mental balance in the following ways:
“Most everybody is overwhelmed. And they respond with various defense mechanisms. Denial, isolation, increased greed (I’ll get it while I can”), righteousness (It’s their own fault). There are a whole set of mechanisms that people use to keep from being open, because the quality of the human heart uncontrolled by the mind is that it will give away everything… We have to find ways to exercise the compassion of our hearts, and at the same moment learn how to know what the limits are and be able to say no without guilt.”
—Ram Dass
